IRISH LAKE MONSTERS

I found this topic on boards.ie about Irish Lake Monsters. A Thankyou to 6th for posting this information, its very interesting.

When I first started looking at Crytids in Ireland I thought there wouldnt be much to look at but seems Ireland has a number of Lake Monsters etc. Most seem to be stories of giant eels and modern enough. Here is a list of some:

Circular Creature
Location: Lower Lough Bray - Waters of the lake
Date / Time: 03 June 1963
Further Comments: Two friends watching the Lough spotted a large, dark grey circular body rise from the lake, almost four metres in circumference. The head was slightly away from the body, and stood 90 centimetres out of the water.

Petticoat Loose
Location: Clogheen - Large pond in the Knockmealdown Mountains
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The monster known as Petticoat Loose has a body similar to that of a horse, while the head takes the form of a woman. When it appears (which is rare), the creature asks 'When will the day of judgement come?' before disappearing back under the water.

Long Creature
Location: Lough Bran (or Brin) - General area
Date / Time: 1940
Further Comments: Stories of this creature date back many years, thought the description varies considerably. The more recent sightings imply the monster to be like a giant eel, in excess of four metres in length.

Chicken Eater
Location: Myross Bay - Forests in the area
Date / Time: 1921
Further Comments: After the local population of chickens took a dive, the problem was blamed on an unpleasant creature which one local man spotted in the nearby woods. The witness said he passed the monster as it sat on a rock - the size of a dog, the creature resembled a cat, though it had a tapering, bald tail.

The Kerry Carabuncle
Location: Tiduff - Mount Brandon - Lough Veagh and/or Lough Geal
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This lake is home to a mythical snake-like beast which is covered in jewels and gold. The monster is said only to appear once every seven years.

Scaled Creature
Location: Achill Sound - Glendarry Lake
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: One witness said that this lake monster looked like a dinosaur, thought the creature had scales running down its back. Another viewer saw the monster on the lake bank - he described it as four metres in length, with a long neck and a sheep's head. It moved in little 'hops'.

Playing Creatures
Location: Croagh Patrick - Lough na Corra
Date / Time: 1911
Further Comments: Four people watched several strange black creatures playing and diving around the surface of the lake. They said the animals were larger than horses, which they could see standing on the shore line.

Hippo-like Beast
Location: Glinsk - Lough Dubh, aka Black's Lake, between Glinsk and Roscommon
Date / Time: 1962
Further Comments: A father and son out fishing fled after encountering a strange water creature the size of a cow. It possessed short thick legs, and a hippo face with small ears and a white pointed horn on its nose.

Rhino-Like Creature
Location: Glinsk - River Suck
Date / Time: March 1962
Further Comments: A cow-sized creature was hooked by a man and his son out fishing along the river - the monster emerged from the water after the younger of the two snagged it with his hook. The strange beast was described as having short stumpy legs, small ears, and a single horn protruding from its nose.

Water Horse
Location: Gort - Coole Lake
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The lake is said to be home of a mysterious water monster resembling a horse.

Giant Eel
Location: Gort - Lough Graney
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: At least one swimmer in the Lough has been chased by a wriggling water monster, named by locals as a giant eel.

Pair of Dadharchu
Location: Lake Glenade - Waters of the Lake
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Translated their name means 'Hound of the Deep'; two Dadharchu lived in this lake until one of the beasts killed and ate a young bride. Her husband exacted revenge by shooting one of the creatures and taking a sword to the other. Regardless whether this is myth or legend, there have been reports in the twentieth century of four metre long creatures seen swimming in the lake.

Loathsome Creature
Location: Lough Fadda - Waters of the lake
Date / Time: 1954 onwards
Further Comments: After spotting this strange water creature, one of the witnesses had nightmares for weeks after the event, and refused to return alone to the lake. She said the creature was long and black, with smooth skin and a head like a shark.

Brief Visitor
Location: Lough Graney - Waters of the Lake
Date / Time: Every seven years (exact time unknown)
Further Comments: Said to resemble a giant eel, this monstrous creature appears only once every seven years.

Dobhar Chu
Location: Lough Mask - Waters of the lough

Further Comments: A man walking along the bank of Lough Mask had a narrow escape when a water beast jumped from the water and tried to drag the witness into the water. The man managed to escape and ran for his life.

Horned Eel
Location: Lough Nahioon - Waters of the lake
Date / Time: 22 February 1968
Further Comments: A family watched this creature, almost four metres long, swimming around the lake. It was described as dark and long without hair or eyes, and possessed two horns at the top of the head.

Frightful Beast
Location: Lough Ree - Waters of the lake
Date / Time: 800 AD?
Further Comments: A swimmer was torn to pieces by a monster after trying to leave a small island in this body of water. More recently, it has been speculated that the lake is home to a giant eel.

Thick Eel
Location: Ballyronan - Lough Neagh
Date / Time: 1986
Further Comments: Two people in a two man kayak quickly headed towards the shore after spotting a long black creature under the water with a body the thickness of two human legs.

Stoned Monster
Location: Lough Major - Waters of the lake
Date / Time: 1911 or 1912
Further Comments: Three boys watched a weird water creature playing in the lake - they threw stones at the creature and ran when it approached them. They stated it had a hairy, horned head.

I also made a Google map of the sightings. You can view the map HERE.
